Prickly Pear

We are lucky enough to have some Prickly Pear cactus in our yard. Not many folks know that cactus actually do grow in Michigan. Cactus growing in an area that freezes solid in the winter? Oh yes. And in the summer? OH the flowers. This prickly cactus flowers are blooming now and they are simply amazing!

They are good for pollinators including several bee species, moths and even butterflies. They readily grow in any sandy full sun area. They will tolerate gravelly soils as well but must be well drained. They grow in the the Lake Michigan dunes as well.
